Very interesting! These are Pentatomoidea, commonly known as shield bugs or stink bugs. Shield bugs have glands in their thorax between the first and second pair of legs which produce a foul smelling liquid. This liquid is used defensively to deter potential predators and is sometimes released when the bugs are handled carelessly.

Black mushroom, who knew they came in so many colors *are these the ones that when stepped on make an explosion of black dust?

This devilishly handsome insect is the Common Milkweed Locust (Phymateus morbillosus) and it reaches lengths of 60-72 mm. As the name suggests, these large locusts prefer to feed on the milkweed plant Asclepias fruticosus. Its vivid coloration serves as a warning sign to all predators that it’s not going to make a tasty lunch. Feeding on the milkweed plant allows it to absorb toxins into its body that can be poisonous to other hungry creatures.
