Many of the homes in Pompeii were behind 'store fronts' such as these. You can see the oven behind the 'bowl' - servants would cook the food then serve it out of these built in bowls to passing patrons. Love that countertop! Thermopolium, Pompeii

In ancient Rome, a thermopolium was a commercial establishment where it was possible to purchase ready-to-eat food, the forerunner of today's restaurant. The items served at the thermopolia are sometimes compared to modern fast-food. These places were mainly used by the poor or those who simply could not afford a private kitchen, sometimes leading them to be scorned by the upper class. A typical thermopolium would consist of a small room with a distinctive masonry counter in the front…

A personal account of the day of destruction

Recent findings have given clues to the last hours that Lupercus lived during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that buried the city of Pompeii. Lupercus was only identified by the bronze seal that he carried with him that night that declared him to be an imperial slave. As Lupercus thought that he would be safe from the heat and mud spewing out of Vesuvius as he was on the beach, near the water, along with many other citizens of Pompeii. He watched as Vesuvius continued to send out ash, rocks…

Thermopolium in Pompeii

A thermopolium is a kind of Roman bar which served hot and cold drinks. The tiled bar-top is fitted with recessed terracotta jars that would have contained the drinks. On the back wall is a fresco painting: specifically it is a lararium (a shrine to Roman household gods), featuring Bacchus on the far right and Mercury on the far left. This particular example is called the thermopolium of Vetutius Placidus and is located on the Via dell'Abbondanza in the ancient ruined Roman town of Pompeii.

Reader: Ancient Romans were party animals -- or at least furries

The ancient Romans were remarkably accomplished people, as evidenced by A Day in Pompeii, a special exhibit now on display at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. But not only were they responsible for many inventions, they also knew how to party, as Cory Casciato reports. See also: -...
