Handwelted Goodyear construction involves two layer of stitching. This picture shows the first layer being stitched, connecting the leather upper to the welt of the sole. The second layer is stitching between the welt and the sole of the shoe. Goodyear construction provides double protection against wear and tear and protects the wearer from external elements.
