During the first Florida gubernatorial debate between Republican former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis and Democratic Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, DeSantis repeatedly said Gillum presides over a city that has the highest crime rate in the state. Crime statistics show that claim to be incorrect. Gillum countered that Tallahassee is at a five-year low in crime.

Four years have gone by since we first posed the question to readers: Which destination is the South’s ultimate urban gem? And the answers, unsurprisingly, have been varied. Some readers prefer their Southern metropolises with a heavy dose of historic charm, while others love all things sleek and modern. It was a beautiful, crisp day. Cold, but sunny. Steam gently lifted off the river as the morning sun twinkled in the reflection, and our kayak oars silently glided side to side.
