a little lusciousness: LE BUN, DALSTON London Eats, Pop Up Restaurant, London Life, Places To Eat, Lust, Hamburger, Restaurants, Photo Wall, Yummy Food

I'm a big fan of Le Bun. I discovered their burgers a couple of years ago and they're one of the few places I'll go for a burger in London. They kept my sustenance levels up at Wilderness, and now they've got a residency at Birthdays in Dalston, so obviously I had to go and check that their food is still as good as I remember it being (it's been a few months). I'm happy to say it is, and not only is it as good, it's actually better - there's more on the menu (Le Mac, chicken burgers, vegan…

Dum Biryani, Soho

Foodies have long been used to criticising Japanese restaurants for trying to do too much on one menu. Anywhere attempting to master the art of udon, ramen, tempura and sushi at all one time under one roof is opening themselves for scorn from People Who Know Better (ahem), as (as anyone who Knows Better will tell you) you can't possibly hope to master all these completely different styles of cuisine in one go. It's just Not Done. As to why we don't hold other cuisines to the same standards…

Sabor, Heddon Street

Just off Regent Street and already full of average restaurants, Heddon Street isn’t the first place you’d think of going for a great meal. A strange choice then for Nieves Barragan’s first standalone restaurant after leaving the Barrafina empire she helped create. Once inside however it’s all rather lovely. We take a seat at the low counter overlooking the brightly tiled kitchen and sip on …

Restaurants are funny things. Sometimes a meal can be technically flawless, served efficiently and in wonderful surroundings and yet somehow still leave you cold, whereas other times any number of imperfections and bum notes can, through sheer force of personality, make a very satisfying whole. Whether or not a particular meal "works" is subject to so many different factors, and so many very personal issues and influences come into play, that recommending anywhere can become a genuinely…

Cheese and Biscuits: CoCo Ichibanya, Covent Garden Fast Food Prices, Eggplant Curry, Wagamama, London Eats, Restaurant Seating, Pork Cutlets, Hamburger Patties, Curry Sauce, Covent Garden

CoCo Ichibanya, Covent Garden

Over the years I've tried a few times to boost the number of shorter, single-item reviews on this blog, but for whatever reason - guilt of judging a place from only one dish, the worry that anything less than a 1800-word treatise on the state of the world making it look like I'm being lazy - there's not many made it through the decision-making stage. But I'm going to write about CoCo Ichibanya based on one plate of food that took about 10 minutes to eat one Wednesday lunchtime because this…

Cheese and Biscuits: Din Tai Fung, Covent Garden Shake Shack, Covent Garden, Prawn Dumplings, One By One, Drunken Chicken, Din Tai Fung, Beste Burger, Dried Shrimp, Cheeseburger

Din Tai Fung, Covent Garden

There was a time, back when blogging was young and Twitter just a twinkle in a racist's eye, that when a new restaurant opened there would be a kind of competitive dash to be the first to review it. This wasn't just for bragging rights (although clearly that was a large part of it) - the first reviews ended up higher on the search engine results, and being early meant you had the whole internet hanging on your every word for at least as long as it took other bloggers and the print press to…
