Shortly after his former roommate Tom Eure snapped this photo of Harvey Milk running for San Francisco supervisor (ca. 1973), Milk lost the election. Two weeks after that defeat, Harvey cut his hair, shaved his mustache, bought some suits, and geared up for the next election cycle. He lost again in 1975, but in 1977 became the country's first open homosexual elected to public office.
